DRAGON (D35) - A goodbye!

The 27th of August saw DRAGON (D35) depart the BAE Scotstoun yard for the last time. She was to head to Portsmouth where she became HMS DRAGON. Another proud moment for all the workers involved in her construction, well done to you all.

The latest Clydebuilt ship heading past Scotstoun pier as she heads up to cant at the mouth of KGV dock.

Canting in Glasgow for the final time. Clyde Marine's BATTLER and BRUISER were on hand to assist.

Clyde marine's BITER was heading up to assist the WAVERLEY off Plantation quay.

Swung and heading for Portsmouth.

Seen here as she was about to pass her home of the last few years. I filmed the following minutes in hope she would sound a final salute to the yard, she did and the resulting video can be Viewed Here.

After her cant she went onto the Riverside berths at Shieldhall.

A look across some Partick rooftops.

The new Riverside Museum in the centre of the shot and the Glasgow Tower and Science Centre over at Plantation quay.

The paddle steamer WAVERLEY was not at her Pantation quay berth, sadly for me. The BBC Scotland headquarters can be seen to the left. This part of the Clyde was once packed with visiting cargo ships of yesteryear. For a look at a classic photograph of this part of Glasgow, Click Here.

Carrier block LB03 - outbound

The 16th of August saw the departure of the semi submersible barge AMT TRADER and her cargo. Firmly secured to the deck of the barge was the first Govan built section for the new Royal Navy aircraft carriers, HMS QUEEN ELIABETH and HMS PRINCE OF WALES. The BAE Govan yard will build two mega blocks for each carrier. This was the first of those four blocks to depart the Clyde, known as Lower Block 03 (LB03). The next block that will depart Govan will be LB04 and will be almost 50% heavier than LB03, that move will happen in mid 2012. Both carriers are being assembled at the Roysth Dockyard on the Forth. Svitzer's ANGLEGARTH and SVITZER MILFORD were on the bow of the barge. Clyde Marine's BATTLER was travelling ahead of the pack in order to clear anything floating in the river that could foul the exposed propellors on both Svitzer tugs. The Type 45 is DRAGON (D35), I've read that this mega block weighs more than that fully displaced Type 45.

The barge had a police escort all the way downriver.

A product of the BAE Systems Govan yard passing the BAE Systems Scotstoun yard. Both yards are home of the Type45 Destroyer build program.

Yet another Glasgow Fair scene

The scene on the night of the 29th of July, the final Friday night cruise of the 2011 Glasgow Fair. The paddle steamer WAVERLEY is seen heading downriver on a piss up doon the watter, a reverse of the final Saturday of the 2010 Glasgow Fair scene. In the background is the tall ship GLENLEE alongside her new berth at Pointhouse. The new Riverside Museum is built on the very spot that WAVERLEY was built on. That piece of land was home to the A&J Inglis shipyard at Pointhouse, I suppose for the record the WAVERLEY isn't Clydebuilt as she was launched into the river Kelvin. Anyway, here is a famous Glasgow tradition that carries on for another year. July 2011 and a paddle steamer heading doon the watter and passing a busy shipyard on her way out for a night doon the watter.

The new Riverside Museum up at Pointhouse. Hopefully any future development at the old Meadowside shipyard (between WAVERLEY and the museum) will compliment the new Riverside building. In my opinion the new museum is a big let down inside but very striking on the outside.

Back to the main topic, from the tourist face of Glasgow to the real face of Glasgow.

A very pleasant sight to witness, another wee moment in Clydeside history. WAVERLEY passing the BAE Systems Govan shipyard. The semi submersible barge AMT TRADER was straddling the entrance to the Govan basin whilst the carrier block LB03 waits to be loaded onto the barge.

Clyde Marine's BOOJUM BAY had assisted WAVERLEY from Plantation quay.

A good crowd on board as they pass the Govan Riviera.

LB03 QE class carrier block

BAE Govan's first contribution to the first of the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers being built for the Royal Navy, HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. This block is the Lower Block 03 (LB03). This was the scene on the night of the 29th of July. The semi submersible barge AMT TRADER was lined up at the Govan Ro-Ro berth with LB03 waiting to be moved onboard. The move was to take place on the 31st of July with the barge setting sail for the Rosyth Dockyard on the 16th of August, pics and a better sense of scale to follow.

ARKLOW RIVAL & BOOJUM BAY

BOOJUM BAY making her way down from Braehead to Renfrew to assist an Arklow ship from the old Lobnitz basin. The duo of Type 45's are DEFENDER (D36, inside) and DRAGON (D35), both berthed up at the deep water berth (the Wall) at BAE Scotstoun. One of the Clydelink boats was headed for the Yoker slip.

Seen here arriving in for Shieldhall Riverside on Glasgow's Fair Friday. The start of the annual two week Glasgow Fair. WILSON CADIZ was in to collect some sort of waste material, possibly tonnes of empty wine bottles from a Fair Friday in Govan. More info on the ship can be Read Here.

Clyde Marine Services' ROVER heading up upriver as WILSON CADIZ attempts to swing mid-river.

Swung but now struggling to get alongside due to the strength of the tide.

Her attempt to berth portside was abandoned.

Back facing the way she arrived, albeit a few gallons of fuel lighter.

With WILSON CADIZ finally alongside her berth WOLTHUSEN backed away from the scrap berth at Adam's.

Swing almost complete.

Final shot as she passes the old gate at Scotstoun pier, this area is being saved from collapse thanks to some good judgement.

The paddle steamer WAVERLEY heading back up to her berth at Plantation Quay on the afternoon of the 14th of July. She is seen here as she was about to pass not only the tall ship GLENLEE but also her birthplace. She was built on the land that is now home to the Riverside Museum, which can be seen to the right.

One way of dealing with rising fuel costs.

Glasgow's Riverside Museum

A look down towards the new Riverside Museum at Pointhouse. The tall ship GLENLEE is now berthed alongside the new quayside at Pointhouse. Clyde Marine's ROVER was heading towards the new Pontoon at Yorkhill quay.

The new museum in the background and the Glasgow City Heliport to the right. If your looking for an opinion on the new Riverside Museum, it's a let down. Nice building but too small and the layout is a big disappointment. We were told that the new museum would allow for more exhibits to be displayed. I didn't think that more floorspace included the walls and ceiling. Decide for yourself, but don't be surprised of you can't get parked or find that on your return home you have a sore neck. As for the Maritime display, shocking! It's ok having a fancy conveyor system but to have Glasgow's amazing maritime heritage represented in this way is a disgrace. Whilst Glasgow City Council celebrate this underwhelming (plus well over budget) achievement the old Govan Dry Dock complex lie in ruins. A Victorian masterpiece that should be home to Scotland's National Maritime Museum. Onyersel GCC!
